Fate of 15 Deemed Universities in TN in Stake!!

Around 15 Deemed Universities in Tamil Nadu facing the closure from University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi.

According to the Supreme Court order, the universities blacklisted by the UGC will be under scanner for next two weeks. The admission to these deemed universities will be decided by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), New Delhi. It may affect the student’s future.

As per the UGC sources, NAAC is the only board that can only check a status review based on the available documents and cannot visit the campus directly.

The UGC's Tandon committee in 2009 reviewed 126 deemed universities across India. After that, they had rated category 'A' to 38 deemed universities across the country. Around 44 universities has been rated as 'B' these universities can be improved. The left 44universities were listed under 'C' category, naming them as unfit to be called as deemed to be universities.

The Dean, Planning and Development ofSastra University,S Vaidhyasubramaniamsaid "A two-week deadline for NAAC to accredit 'C' category deemed universities will result in further distortions as the NAAC process involves a systematic approach”.

He also said NAAC would take around 3 to 6 months to review a university.
